EOAS Institute Postdoctoral Program - 2020
EOAS will begin accepting applications for the 2020 Institute Postdoctoral Program on or about December 1, 2019. Please review the information below before applying.
The Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) invites applications for two new postdoctoral associates to join the EOAS Institute Postdoctoral Program, beginning Fall 2020.
EOAS unites a Rutgers University-wide, interdisciplinary community studying the past, present and future of the Earth system, including the solid Earth, ocean, atmosphere, and biosphere, and humanity’s dependence and impacts upon them. Its members advance the scientific understanding of our planet’s past, present and future and build the knowledge and perspective needed for equitable state, national and global stewardship of a healthy, sustainable and resilient planetary environment.
The EOAS Institute Postdoctoral Program brings to Rutgers excellent early-career scientists seeking to engage in research that cuts across Earth system science disciplines. Institute Postdoctoral Associates work with multidisciplinary teams of at least two EOAS faculty mentors to foster new research collaborations with high intellectual merit and broader impact. We welcome candidates from all areas related to EOAS’s scientific missions, with a particular focus on four integrative strategic science themes:
- Evolution of Earth, climate, and life
- Polar environmental change
- Data science for Earth system knowledge and predictability
- Earth system science to advance climate and environmental governance
EOAS Institute Postdoctoral Associate appointments are for one year beginning on September 1, 2020, and provide 12 months of salary with a minimum stipend of $48,000, plus health insurance and other employee benefits. An additional twelve months of support will be granted subject to satisfactory review, totaling 24 months.
To be eligible for this award, candidates must have a Ph.D. in a related discipline by the start date of the position and demonstrate excellence in research and strong communication skills. Candidates are required to have no more than 3 years of postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment.

Research Proposal Format Guidelines
Candidates must provide a research proposal developed in consultation with their proposed faculty mentors, who should be clearly identified in the proposal. The proposal must clearly outline project motivation, hypotheses to be tested, methods to be used, the intellectual merit and broader impacts of the project, and the potential for the project to lead to external funding. The proposal should be a maximum of three (3) pages, with a minimum 11-point standard font. References are required but not included in the three-page maximum.
Candidates should review the EOAS Faculty Directory for a complete list of potential mentors. Proposed mentorship teams may be composed of a minimum of two (2) EOAS faculty members, and at least one faculty member must be from one of the following departments in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences: Ecology, Evolution & Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, or Marine & Coastal Sciences. One of the faculty mentors will be designated as the primary mentor, and, as the name implies, take primary responsibility for mentoring the trainee.
Expectations of Mentors:
- Provide trainees opportunities to successfully and responsibly conduct, present, and publish research.
- Provide trainees opportunities to participate in proposal preparation.
- Provide resources to support trainees’ projects.
- Provide networking opportunities and career mentoring.
Letters of Recommendation
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required by January 25, 2020. Once an application is successfully submitted, the references listed will be contacted via email and provided with instructions on how to submit the letter. We strongly recommend candidates follow up with their references after they have applied to ensure that the references have received the information to submit their letter.
Mentorship Team Letter
Candidates must procure a single letter signed by their proposed mentorship team that addresses their willingness to serve as mentors.
Candidates will be evaluated based on: 1) their past record and letters of reference; 2) the feasibility, intellectual merit, and broader impacts of their proposed research, including the potential for their work to advance cross-disciplinary research at Rutgers within the Earth system sciences and the potential to lead to new external funding; and 3) the ability of their proposed mentor team to facilitate their research.
