Speaker: Dr. Andrea Ferro, Clarkson University

Abstract:

This seminar describes the advances made over the past two years in understanding the airborne transmission of viruses as well as highlights priority areas for ongoing research. Since the identification of COVID-19, many researchers across the globe have pivoted their work to quickly address open scientific questions on the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. At Clarkson, we have been engaged in multiple studies to characterize expiratory aerosol emissions; understand aerosol transport from source to receptor; quantify the effectiveness of mitigation measures such as distance, ventilation, face coverings, and other physical barriers; develop new bioaerosol sensors; and understand the role of resuspension in viral transmission. In collaboration with many other colleagues, we hope to inform design of indoor environments and help shape effective public health policies and communication to reduce the devastating impacts of the current and future pandemics.
